Frequently, I hear my patients comment that self-care is a luxury, or an indulgence. But if you think about it, it’s really a necessity, isn’t it? Our health affects everyone around us; If you are not well, how can you take care of others? When flying, there is a reason that you are instructed to place your oxygen mask on before assisting others. Taking care of yourself will give you the energy, physical ability, and emotional state necessary to be able to better take care of others. Life isn’t just about trying to survive, it’s about thriving.
A recent article in Forbes titled Self Care Is Not An Indulgence. It’s a Disciplinewritten by Tami Forman, sums it up beautifully. “Self-care is also a discipline because it’s not something you do once in awhile when the world gets crazy. It’s what you do every day, every week, month in and month out. It’s taking care of yourself in a way that doesn’t require you to “indulge” in order to restore balance. It’s making the commitment to stay healthy and balanced as a regular practice.”
I will not accept age as the sole reason why a person has aches and pains, or “loses” the ability do things they once loved, like playing golf, or taking the grandkids to Disney. The real reason this happens is that most people are reactive, meaning he or she waits for symptoms to appear before doing anything about it. Think of it this way, you either pay for it now, or you pay for it later. It takes a lot less aggravation to get your oil changed periodically than it does waiting for the engine to burn out. Try being proactive instead. Proactive Care means taking care of your health before symptoms appear. Often an underlying dysfunction, or disease is present long before symptoms begin. Proper proactive self-care will revitalize you inside and out and is so important in many realms. Stress management, adequate sleep, mindfulness, and emotional and physical health are all equally important. It is so much easier to stay well than to get well.
